Roots Run Deep - Deborah Bryant
Roots Run Deep is an AgCarolina Farm Credit campaign detailing the connection of our employees to their family farms and the agriculture community.
“My father literally stepped down off the horse that he rode around Odom Correctional Institute as a corrections officer in 1973 and became a full-time farmer like his father before him. Roots run deep in the small, close knit Mt. Carmel community in Northampton County. Both my father and mother were blessed to be raised on farms as well. They worked that same Northampton County soil raising peanuts, cotton, soybeans, and cattle. Growing up, my sister and I farmed alongside them like spokes in a wheel to keep the family farm rolling. We’d pull weeds, mend fences, feed cows, and stomp cotton down in trailers at harvest time. I was fifteen when I asked my father to teach me how to drive the tractor, and I learned on the first one he ever bought, the John Deere 4000 behind me and my husband, Mark. The days were long and sometimes money was tight but, we always had a bountiful harvest of family, faith, friends, and farming - things we still cultivate in Mt. Carmel today.
I started at AgCarolina Farm Credit twenty-seven years ago in the Jackson office and had the pleasure of working in Ahoskie and now in Halifax. Mark and I have farmed since 2009 and are proud that both of our children now farm as well. We wouldn’t have it any other way.”
I’m Deborah Bryant and my #RootsRunDeep.
